EFTPOS for mechanics and workshops

Big invoices, a card mix weighted towards business cards, and money frequently taken before the car is finished. Each of those moves the price in a different direction.

Invoice size makes the percentage decisive

A workshop invoice is large enough that the percentage dominates and the monthly costs are noise. A quarter of a per cent is worth more than the terminal.

Free-terminal offers attached to a higher rate are the standard deal in this trade and usually the wrong one at this invoice size.

Fleet and commercial cards

Fleet cards, business cards and corporate cards all cost more to accept than a consumer debit card. Workshops see more of them than most trades, and a rate quoted on a consumer mix will not hold.

Ask for a quote against your actual mix. If nobody asks what your mix is, the quote is a guess.

Deposits for parts

Taking a deposit over the phone before ordering parts is card-not-present — higher rate, chargeback risk on you. It is worth pricing separately rather than letting it hide inside a terminal rate.
